The SmithStonian institute . . .

. . . of half baked ideas is more like it. In case you haven't gotten the first part SmithStonian - my name is Stony Smith.

I have a very active imagination, and my brain won't let me have a moment to myself - ever, it's always coming up with something interesting, I have nobody around half the time to tell these things to, so I've decided to have a section online that I can through my half baked ideas out to the universe and see what comes back, feel free to send me links if these ideas if they already exist, or if you have and idea to improve them or just shoot-em down(I'll post the responses, if you wish).

I don't watch a lot of TV and I try not to be influenced by magazines, and I have no idea where these ideas come from, probably a practical application that suits my life or a situation that requires some thought. From cars to home, my brain won't stop. And from time to time I'll pass things along that I find cool; I guess this will be my blog.....

I can’t help myself

So I have this CMP army truck that was pretty gone, not that I can’t rebuild it or anything, I just like modifying and dreaming of other things that I could do to it. As I look out the shop door and see the rolling CMP chassis waiting patiently for me to get on it, I wonder if it would be easier to draw up a design similar to the Alvis or HEMTT cab and make it a flat deck with attachment options. The CMP has a really short wheel base and has limited engine location options. A cab in front of the axle like the HEMTT would keep it lower and the engine out back with more room for cargo and could look very future militant. The Alvis has a very cold war post apocalyptic look about it and has cool roof entry hatches. Hmmmm

Crossfit Newmarket Central -new location -massive rig

So when I’m not thinking about or building cars I do a lot of Crossfit and that led to me building various pull-up rigs for various gyms. I differ from other shops because I build it custom for their application and I can do the installation as well. This rig can have 40 people doing pull-ups at the same time -photos to come once the gym is open!

I’ve done loads of shows

Over the years. I’m working on other cars while I wait for the Bootch to come back from paint…. again! -10 days till we need to get it to the Autoshow here in Toronto, then I need to reassemble it again. I think I work my best under pressure, we’ve always made the show, blown motors, accidents, paint problems, interior problems, transportation, you name it -it’s happened. We can always come up with a solution and sort it out -Lots of late nights, loads of drama -real life stuff, probably why I’m losing my hair. These are the times that you really live….. and I like it. Ride that wave of stress, and pass the stress on to others so that they can live as well.

Crossfit Tidal’s new Rig

They now have 2 locations in Toronto which meant they needed a new rig -who else is going to come in and measure your place up for a custom Pull-up station, with built in squat racks -and then install it? Oddball, because I like to do pull-ups.

Can’t help myself

I can make a excuse for anything, I know I didn’t really need this or another project but cool is cool -I don’t think I have enough time on this planet for everything I want to do, but If I squint I can see the future of this truck -Cummins, chevy axles, paint and drive -easy right?

Santa Sleigh?

It’s not all cars and work around here -sometime I build some fun stuff for pain -that’s right I said pain, how can a Santa Sleigh bring pain? If you have to pull it around for 12hrs that’s how, this was for GoRuck Class 352 in Philadelphia.

I was asked by Aron to build a sleigh for the Christmas event –why not –never having built a true “sled” before, I had no idea how this was going to work out, it needed to tough! It was going to be dragged around Philly all night loaded with presents for kids at the Hospital that we were to drop off the next morning –they must remain clean, and unbroken. Aron had built a harness to connect 20 people together to pull the Sleigh, the pulling was hard on the thighs, but the addition of bear crawls, bricks, push ups, flutter kicks, a dip in the “F’ing cold” Schuylkill river, people been killed off and having to be carried either in the sleigh or on our backs started to make it “fun” –“Embrace the suck” was the mantra of the night.

Most of the people had done a Goruck event before and knew what to expect, so the Cadre gave us some extra special beastings to remind us that this isn’t just a charity event –good times! check the links to the photos of the event, these events go on all over North America and 3 are scheduled for Toronto this summer minus the sleigh!

The new shop truck

My plan is to keep chipping away at this one till it’s done and being Scottish (although way back) I’m still a cheap bastard and will probably nickel and dime myself to death on this project. When I got the truck it was just a cab and frame -I don’t want a flat deck or a ramp truck to haul cars on I want a go anywhere command vehicle, something I can 4×4 into the woods or up a ski hill and crank the tunes and lounge in some hammocks. This truck is know as a CGT (Chevy Gun Tractor) but the back section as taken off and the truck was used as a snow plow -so most of the cool parts that make this truck a CGT are gone, and building a new back section would be easy but it won’t allow me to do what I want with it, but in Australia they have a different version of the gun tractor with a full back -super rare around these parts but there are enough pictures out there for me to be able to build one. These are some of the Teardown shots and some of the assemblies needing work -I can tell it’s going to be more restoration than Fab by the pile of stuff I’m keeping.

Do some Pull ups!

Crossfit Newmarket Central ask me to build them a pull up rig that could span the opening of the delivery door -no problem

No room for pull ups is not an option anymore
